Answer in brief
The week you need to get an SR-22 in place is not the week to learn the vocabulary. This checklist covers what to gather, what to ask, what to compare and the order to do it in so the filing lands before the deadline and the premium behind it is the lowest you can reasonably find.

Gather
- The notice stating SR-22 or FR-44, required limits and duration.
- Licence number, conviction date, vehicle VIN (or confirmation that you need a non-owner policy).
- Your current declarations page, if you have one, to match coverage.
Ask every provider
- Do you file SR-22s/FR-44s electronically, and what is the fee?
- How many years do you rate a DUI?
- What is the total annual cost paid in full and paid monthly?
- Which discounts do I still qualify for?
Compare
- Identical limits and deductibles across at least three quotes.
- Total annual cost including all fees.
- Recovery path: a slightly higher price with a shorter lookback may be cheaper over three years.

Bind and confirm
- Bind the new policy effective on or before any current policy ends.
- Get written confirmation that the filing was sent and accepted.
- Only then cancel any existing policy.
- Calendar the renewal date and the three-year mark.
The reasoning behind each step is in the SR-22 guide and the shopping guide.
