Answer in brief

If your current insurer will not file an SR-22/FR-44 you need, switch now. If they will, and your premium is locked until renewal, shop now but switch at renewal unless a new quote is low enough to justify any cancellation fee. Whatever the timing, bind the new policy and confirm the new filing before cancelling the old one—a gap of even a day is a lapse that can reset your filing period.

When to Switch Car Insurance Companies After a DUI — Car Insurance After DUI

Three scenarios

SituationTimingWhy
Current insurer does not file SR-22/FR-44Switch immediatelyYou cannot reinstate without a filing
Current insurer files; premium locked until renewal; renewal is months awayShop now, switch at renewalYou are paying the pre-DUI rate until renewal; no reason to leave early unless a quote is dramatically lower
Renewal notice arrived with a large increaseCompare and switch before the renewal dateThe new term is where the increase lands; a better quote elsewhere saves the whole year

Mid-term cancellation

You can cancel a policy mid-term. Most insurers refund the unused premium pro rata; some apply a short-rate penalty, a modest percentage of the unearned premium. Ask before you cancel. If a new quote saves more than the penalty over the remaining term, switching early is rational. If your current rate is still the pre-DUI rate, it almost never is.

The sequence that avoids a gap

  1. 1

Bind the new policy with a start date on or before the old one ends

Overlap of a day is fine; a gap is not.

  2. 2

Confirm the new SR-22/FR-44 is filed and accepted

Get written confirmation from the new insurer, and check with the state if you can.

  3. 3

    Then cancel the old policy

In writing, effective the day the new policy starts. Ask for an SR-26 only once the new filing is active.

  4. 4

    Keep both declarations pages

Proof of continuous coverage is useful for every future application.

Step 1 of 5: Are you currently insured?

Loyalty does not help here

Longevity discounts rarely survive a major violation, and an insurer that prices DUIs steeply will not price yours gently because you have been a customer for ten years. Compare on total annual cost and recovery path; see the shopping guide.

Questions & answers

Will I be charged a fee to cancel mid-term?

Some insurers apply a short-rate penalty; many refund pro rata with no fee. Ask before you cancel.

Can I switch insurers during my SR-22 period?

Yes, as long as the new filing is active before the old policy ends.

Terms: SR-22, Nonrenewal, Surcharge
